How to recognise pigmentation and hyperpigmentation<\/h2>\n

Pigmentation shows itself as dark discolouration, ranging from light brown to deeper brown or even greyish. It can be small and subtle, or more widely spread across the face. It often appears in areas that have seen a lot of sun, such as the temples, cheeks, nose and forehead. What you see on the surface is only part of the story. Beneath the skin, there is an increased production of melanin, the pigment that gives your skin its colour. When this process falls out of balance, it builds up and becomes visible as patches.<\/p>\n

What causes hyperpigmentation?<\/h2>\n

Hyperpigmentation develops through a combination of external influences and processes within the body. Sun exposure plays a significant role, though hormones, stress and skin damage can also intensify the process. At Babassu, we often see pigmentation appear after periods of intense sun, pregnancy or hormonal fluctuations. Small inflammations in the skin, such as those caused by acne, can also leave pigmentation behind. In these cases the skin responds by trying to protect itself, but overreacts in doing so.<\/p>\n

What happens in the skin during pigment formation<\/h2>\n

Pigment formation begins in the deeper layers of the skin, where melanocytes are active. These cells produce melanin in response to triggers such as UV radiation or inflammation. The pigment is then carried upwards and becomes visible at the surface. When this process is disrupted, for example by sun, pregnancy or hormones, too much pigment is produced in one area. The skin loses its even tone and visible patches appear. This means your approach should focus not only on fading pigment, but also on regulating this process within the skin.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>
