The same ritual as your facial skincare

A healthy scalp is the foundation of beautifully cared-for hair that also grows well. Oils, styling products and dandruff can all accumulate on the scalp (known as build-up), and this diminishes the condition of your hair. The hair begins to look duller and the scalp can become irritated, leading to itchiness. It is important, then, to keep the scalp, just like your facial skin, thoroughly clean with the best hair care products. Ideally in the same way as your face, following a routine of cleansing, exfoliating, nourishing and protecting.

Cleansing with gentle shampoos

Ideally, cleanse your hair once or twice a week with a gentle shampoo that contains as few harsh cleansing agents as possible, such as phthalates and sulphates (SLS, SLES). These may give your shampoo a pleasing lather, but they do little good for your scalp. They also strip away the skin’s own oils, which can leave the scalp dry and, in turn, irritated. Would you like to preserve your hair colour? More volume? Or does your hair need a little strength? Choose a shampoo that best suits your hair’s needs.

Scalp massage

To exfoliate the scalp and lift away dirt and styling-product residue, there are, alongside cleansing shampoos, also scrub shampoos, anti-dandruff shampoos and deep-cleansing shampoos with apple cider vinegar. A thorough massage with the fingers or a scalp brush removes dead skin cells, which helps to ease itchiness and gives the hair roots the oxygen they need to grow.

Nourishing with a conditioner

Just like the skin on your face, our hair sometimes needs a little extra care. An occasional treatment at the salon is often not enough, so pamper your hair after every wash with a conditioner, particularly if it has been damaged by hair dye or daily blow-drying. Because the hair cuticles remain open after washing, a conditioner can penetrate deep into the hair fibre and nourish it straight away. Even the driest hair feels softer and instantly hydrated as a result. Apply the conditioner first to the ends of the hair and gently massage it with your fingertips towards the scalp. Conditioner also makes the hair easier to comb. Rinse it out after around two to five minutes.

Protecting with a conditioner

Do you have curls, or very dry, dull or damaged hair? Then don’t rinse the conditioner out completely, and leave a little in the ends. This helps to keep the hair from frizzing while blow-drying and makes it easier to style. You can also work a conditioner into the ends as heat protection before styling or during the summer. The conditioner protects against the effects of the heat source and outside influences, and helps the ends stay hydrated for longer, kept safe beneath a layer of nourishing, hydrating ingredients.

Patting dry

To keep the ends of your hair looking healthy too, dry it gently after cleansing and conditioning. Try not to rub too hard with the towel, and don’t leave it wrapped in a towel for too long. Make sure, too, that your hair is completely dry before you go to bed. The friction of wet hair against your pillow can damage the ends.
