Description

Acqua della Regina by Santa Maria Novella is built around fresh citrus notes and pays tribute to Caterina de’ Medici’s love for the king of France. Acqua della Regina (the queen’s water) is the house’s oldest fragrance, also known as Acqua di S.M. Novella. Caterina de’ Medici had it made by the Dominican friars in 1533 and took it with her to France when she married Enrico di Valois. For this reason, the scent is thought of as a perfume rather than an eau de cologne. It is a bouquet of fresh citrus notes built on Calabrian bergamot. The mould for the bottle recalls the glass bottles Officina has used over the past two centuries of its history, and is used for all the other Santa Maria Novella colognes made since.

In 1221, the faithful founded the monastery of Santa Maria Novella in Florence and began laying out a garden filled with flowers and herbs. Since 1612, the Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella, the oldest pharmacy in the world, has been making artisanal products based on biodynamically grown herbs and flowers.

The classic colognes and the lovely products for hair, face, body, hands and feet are still made to centuries-old recipes, in the same authentic, artisanal way.
